POP Up & MOVE! - Four Square and Wall Ball
August 2011
-
Here are two fun games I learned in elementary school that are so much fun and easy to set up.
-
Four Square:
-
1. This is a game for two to four players.
-
2. Find a four square box at a park or school or draw your own with sidewalk chalk. If making your own, draw a large square with chalk, then draw both a horizontal and a vertical line through the center of the square creating four smaller squares within the large square.
-
3. Mark one box as the server square (use the number “1”). Serving player stands in box #1.
-
4. Mark the other boxes as “2,” “3,” and “4” for the other players.
-
5. Players rotate down in number (i.e., the new player starts in square 4 and moves up to 3 then 2 and then 1) as other players foul out. Once a player is in the server box, they stay the server until they foul out.
-
6. The server serves the ball to any square by first letting the ball bounce on the ground in his square and then hitting it with an open hand into another square where it will bounce once before the player in that square hits it.
-
7. The receiving player will let the ball bounce once but must hit the ball into any other player’s square before it hits the ground a second time.
-
8. The game continues with players hitting the ball until someone fouls out.
-
9. When a person fouls out they move back to square #4 and the others rotate towards square #1.
-
10. The goal is to get to square #1, keeping the server status for as long as possible.
-
Fouls:
-
1. Ball bounces on a line or out of the court (player that last hit the ball is out).
-
2. Ball bounces more than once in a player’s square (player in that square is out).
-
3. Catching or holding the ball.
-
4. Failure to return the ball.
-
5. Hitting the ball with your fist.
-
Wall Ball:
-
1. Only two players in a game.
-
2. Find a wall next to a paved area.
-
3. Draw boundary lines with sidewalk chalk. You will need two side lines and a back line making a square next to the wall. The play area will be inside the square.
-
4. Server starts on the back line and hits the ball with an open hand, causing the ball to bounce on the ground one time before hitting the wall.
-
5. The other player (returning player) hits the rebound ball. That ball may bounce only one time between the returning player and the wall before the returning player hits it. The returned ball must bounce one time on the ground before hitting the wall.
-
6. The players continue to rebound the ball until one player fouls out. The player who is not fouled scores a point.
-
7. The ball must bounce within boundary lines.
-
Fouls:
-
1. Hitting the ball with your fists.
-
2. Causing the ball to bounce more than one time before it hits the wall or letting it bounce more than one time before you hit it.
-
3. Causing the ball to bounce higher than the wall.
-
4. Causing the ball to bounce on or outside the boundary lines.
